Life’s Journey

Our loved one, Vernon Lowell Lewis, was born to V.L. Lewis and Dorothy (Richardson) Lewis on October 19, 1950, in Houston, Texas (Harris County). He was the second of the four Lewis Dynasty siblings: Leonard, Vernon, Gwendolyn, and Wendolyn Lewis. Vernon accepted Christ as his Lord Savior while attending True Light Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized by the late Rev. Dr. William Bowie Jr. That Pastoral leadership at True Light was proceeded by the late Rev. John W. Bowie and his current Pastor, Rev. Anthony F. Halley II. Vernon’s primary education was molded at P.H. Holden Elementary School, Harper Middle School, and Houston’s Legendary Booker T. Washington High School.

In 1970, he wed Lora Smith, and from this union, three beautiful daughters were named Sonya, Veronica, and Remunda Lewis, who were his everything.

He remained a faithful member of True Light M.B.C. until his health declined.

Vernon was a perfectionist when it came to his appearance. He had an affinity for stylish suits, matching hats, shoes and socks. You couldn’t miss him with sweet treats such as Jolly Ranchers, Werther’s Chewy, sweet drinks, and all types of baked goods. Along with many other things he loved, Vernon enjoyed watching all sports. Listening to KCOH and 90.9 were his favorite radio stations while chanting, “The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire!”
Vernon was a dedicated driver in the transportation industry, where he safely fulfilled deliveries for DHL and transported passengers locally, regionally, and over the road for Metro, Kerrville, and Greyhound. His last employment was with ABS Group before his retirement.

Vernon transitioned from this life to being with his Lord and Savior on the morning of Monday, May 20, 2024, at approximately 6:30am.

He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted parents, Mr. and Mrs. V.L. and Dorothy Z. Lewis, his brother Leonard J. Lewis, and his sister, Gwendolyn Jackson. The golden memories Vernon leaves behind will be deeply cherished by his unconditional, committed, faithful, and loving daughters Sonya Lewis, Veronica Lewis-Jones (Jerome), Remunda Lewis, and his sister Wendolyn Clack. He was proud of his six grandchildren, De’Vondrea, Dante, Doneshea, Dominique, Daisya, and Delvin. Three loving great-grandchildren, Drayton, Sanieya, and Isaiah; Nephews Karlos (Beatrice), Treyndon, and Trevor; Nieces Eddricka (Otis) and Anddria (Jerry). A host of relatives and friends — Collin “Best Potna” Taplin, Marcella Irvin, John J. Lee Sr., members of the True Light Family, Villa Toscana at Cypress Woods, Memorial Hermann Hospital Systems, and the Legendary Booker T. Washington Class of 1968.
