Life’s Journey
November 23, 1950, Sammie Lee Mathews was born to the parents, Elbert and Ruby Sims Mathews in
Navasota, Texas. Sam attended Carverdale School, and he completed his public school education at Cy-
Fair High School. He excelled in track and won numerous medals as well as the State Championship for
the long-distance run.
Sam was awarded a full scholarship to Sam Houston State University where he received a Bachelor of
Arts in Teaching. He continued his educational journey at Prairie View A M University earning a Master
of Arts in Academic and Vocational Counseling. He continued his studies at the University of Houston
earning a master’s in technology occupational education.
Sam worked in mechanical engineering at Cameron Ironworks for two years. He dedicated thirty-eight
years of service as an educator. He worked in Cypress Fairbanks ISD for five years as a Power System
instructor while coaching track (cross country). Sam retired from Fort Bend Independent School District
after serving in the following roles: Industrial Technology Instructor, Department chairperson, Career
Guidance Counselor and Athletic Coach. Sam loved race cars, and fishing, and was an avid gun collector.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Ruby Mae Mathews, his siblings, Elbert Mathews,
Jr., Beatrice Banks, Tommie James Mathews, Myra M. Bailey, and his grandson, Trieyon Damond Green.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 24 years, Yolanda, his daughter, Sameka, his bonus son
Austin, his siblings, Leoma, Addie, Bertha (Terry), Mattie (Gary), Donald and Portia (Charles), his
grandchildren, Saniya, Winston, Chloe, Amar and Kamiya, his honorary children and granddaughter,
Allan(Tina) Trevis (Quarshaunna) and Madison, longtime friend, Arthur McBride, and a host of
nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
