Life’s Journey
Mae Audrey Durand Hypolite was born January 10th, 1936, in Parks, Louisiana to the late Princely and Loina (Berard) Durand. Early in the morning on Sunday January 26th, 2025, the Lord was ready to receive her and she peacefully transitioned to eternal glory at home in Houston, TX, with her husband of 68 years Curley Hypolite Jr. by her side.
Mae grew up in Parks, LA and was a graduate of the 1955 class of George Washington Carver High School in Breaux Bridge, LA. It was also in her hometown that she met Curley. After marrying, they immediately made Houston, TX their home and raised five children – Stephan “Tony”, Janice, Phyllis, Dwayne, and Denise. She gained employment with the Kroger Co and dedicated over 20 years of service before retiring.
Mae affectionately called “Momma, Grandma, or Nanee” was a loving and caring mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, who helped raise her grandchildren. She loved taking care of her grandkids and spoiled them. Mae loved listening to zydeco, blues and gospel music and in her younger days she was a great dancer. Even in her later days she was still on beat to the sound of music. She was also a skilled seamstress, which she acquired from her mother.
Mae enjoyed serving her church and community. An active parishioner of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, she volunteered her time and efforts with dedication, particularly with the Prayer and Hospitality ministries and during the church bazaars. Later when she became ill and could no longer attend mass in person, she still would faithfully watch mass services her husband would record for her and recite the rosary. Curley assumed the full responsibility of caring for her during her illness. With the help of family and health care aides, this allowed her to remain in the comfort of her home until the Lord was ready to call her home.
Left in God’s care to cherish her memory are her husband Curley; sons Stephan “Tony” Hypolite (Hilda), Dwayne Hypolite (Cynthia); daughters Janice Buchanan (Johnny) and Denise Hypolite, all reside in TX; 20 grandchildren – Damion Hypolite (Tosha), Liesel Shields-Ball, Crystal Wooten (Larry), Canan Hypolite, Roman Buchanan, Christopher Hypolite, Derek Hypolite, Cody Hypolite, Aeryana Hypolite, Minasian Hypolite, Brody Hypolite, Ameer Harland, Derolodi Taylor, Logan Wagner, Aleshia Prophet, Brittany Hypolite, Matthew Zion, Rashard Zion, Andre Zion, Mary Zion; 11 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; Uncle Hildred Durand; loving Brothers and Sisters In Law, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Phyllis Hypolite Taylor, her parents Princely and Loina Durand, sisters Mary Ann Charles, Sylvia Bergeron Castillo, Anna Belle Reed; grandsons Nicholas Hypolite, Babatunde Okematti, great-grand daughters; Dasia Trevino, Jayla Taylor.
