Life’s Journey

Benny S. Gipson was born on November 7, 1934, in Garrison, Texas. Selma accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Saviour at an early age. He was raised in the Garrison community where he received his high school diploma from Garrison High School where he played basketball in 1954. After graduation, he was later drafted into the army. He served in combat in the Korean War and received an Honorable discharge in 1957. Shortly after, he attended Houston Community College for auto-mechanics. On April 8, 1967 he was united in marriage to the love of his life Betty Jean Thomas-Gipson. Of his union of 56 years, two children were born, Benny Jr. and Rashida Gipson. Benny was a devoted charter member of St. Agnes Baptist Church. He was a floating giant at Hermann Memorial Hospital, where he worked in the morgue, laundry, operating room, and retired of 42 years from security. He started establishing his entrepreneurship as the owner of Gipson’s Garage and Poor Man’s Barbeque/Tillie’s Place.

Selma was a lover of all sports and had a major love for the Houston Astros. As his health started to take a toll, he became a member of Christian Faith Baptist Church.

Benny Selma Gipson departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents Dovie and George Gipson, siblings Marceil Caraway, Johnnie Gipson, Willie J. Gipson, Arizona Johnson, Faylene Daniels, Billie Berry, and Kenneth Gipson.

He leaves to cherish his memory: Loyal loving wife of 56 years, Betty Gipson, 5 children Sheila Gipson of Georgia, Bonnie Gipson of Florida, Carolyn Gipson of Houston, Benny Gipson Jr. (Latosha) of Houston, and Rashida Gipson (Curtis) of Houston, 8 grandchildren Shanae, Kenneth, Bernard, Benny III, Arlete, Amber, Katrina and Graceson, 9 great-grandchildren Aryanna, Kaiyah, Jacob, K’dynce, Kaycn, Kash, Seliah, Spencer, and Brayden. 2 God sons, Darrell Johnson and Adrian Tomas, Sister, Betty Wright of Dallas, Margie Chimney of Tyler, brother Jacky Gipson (Debra) of Tyler and Howard Gipson of Tyler and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
