Life’s Journey

Annie Mae Charles was born on February 05, 1939 in Waxia, Louisiana to Clarence and Hilda Charles.  She transitioned on December 05, 2023 at 84 years of age. Her siblings who preceded her in death are Edgar Charles (Uncle Boo), Elzena Albert (Aunt Red), Ora Lee Charles(Peewee) and Aunt Dorothy Charles(Doretha). She has a surviving sister in Lois Ann Charles(Aunt Letha Ann).

She attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and graduated number 2 in her class 2 years earlier than projected. She had aspirations of becoming a nurse. She had a great passion for wanting to help others. She channeled that drive into the church and the many women’s ministries she served in.

She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age while attending St. Paul Methodist Church. In 1957 she married Alfred Lee Allen. To this union 3 children were born, Reginald Allen (Debra), Bobby Allen(Monique) and Kevin Allen. Upon moving to Houston she continued her service to God through a number of churches that include, but is not limited to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, McGowen Memorial Church, Greater True Faith Missionary Baptist Church and concluded with Jordan Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

She worked at JC Penney 14 years before accepting a position at Foleys and was eventually promoted to the position of “Buyer”. She worked there 28 years before retiring.

She was blessed with a happy and fruitful life. She never met a stranger. Everyone was a brother, sister, son or daughter in Christ to her.

She loved to dress, sing in church and loved to interact with family.

Annie’s legacy of love, selfless devotion and commitment to serve lives on through her husband and three children; 8 grandchildren including Marlon, Meghan, Marissa, Matthew, Isaac, Jaylon, Marcus and Bethany and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, friends and coworkers who join in celebrating her life.
