Life’s Journey

Joann Smith Burros was born on Thursday, February 4, 1954, in Houston, Texas, to Willie D Smith and Marian Smith Freeman. She entered the world with honey-brown eyes and blonde hair, which earned her the affectionate nickname “Blondie.” At an early age, she was baptized by her cousin, Elder Lonnie Freeman, in a pond in Corrigan, Tetxas. She was raised by her mother in Houston but spent her summers in Corrigan with her grandmother, Josie Freeman.

Joann lived a life of purpose and servitude, guided by her deep sense of compassion and commitment to others. Her purpose was rooted in her unwavering love for family and friends, as she dedicated herself to being a selfless daughter, nurturing mother, devoted grandmother, trusted aunt, and a constant source of strength. Her dedication and love were not only spoken, but evident in all her actions.

Joann’s life was marked by acts of kindness and selflessness, always putting the needs of others before her own. She lived with integrity, humility, and grace, and her vibrant personality made her the life of every party. Joann had a sense of style and elegance like no other. Her infectious smile and distinctive giggle were often on autopilot, radiating joy to everyone around her. She never met a stranger and was loved by all who crossed her path.

Joann’s legacy is one of love, generosity, and a life marked by selfless devotion to serving those around her. Her memories will live in the hearts of her only child, Marion Stewart (Kevin), her grandchildren Coddi Smith and Kacie Stewart, her siblings Diane Williams, Mark Smith, Debbie Stuard (Robert) and Pamela Ennis (Mike), her nieces and nephews Sal, Solomon, Sarah, Tink, Wayne, Mark, Angelica, Gina, Mya Jo, Mia, and a host of cousins, grand-nieces/nephews, and friends, and her church family Open Door.

Joann is preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter Creshaud Smith, and her niece, Hazel “Monalisa” Smith.
